HRH to continue Emergency Department Services at Heights University Hospital through March 14

HRH to continue Emergency Department Services at Heights University Hospital through March 14

Continued, multi-million dollar losses at Heights University Hospital jeopardizes care throughout entire Hudson County healthcare system
Hudson Regional Health (HRH) announced today that the Heights University Hospital Emergency Department will remain open for two additional weeks, through March 14, 2026 at 7:30 pm. Emergency Department services are anticipated to be suspended at that time unless alternative funding to fund operations are secured through the New Jersey Department of Health, or other sources.

HRH communicated to the New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) on Wednesday of its intention to suspend Emergency Department services as of Saturday, February 28. However, after requests from Jersey City elected officials and discussions with NJDOH Commissioner Dr. Raynard Washington, HRH Chairman Yan Moshe agreed to pay for the costs associated of Emergency Department operations for the next two weeks of approximately $1 million.

After downsizing in November, 2025 to primarily Emergency Department services, Heights University Hospital is still projected to lose more than $30 million this year. This follows severe losses of $74 million between November 2024 and December 2025 – financial strain that threatens healthcare services across the HRH network in Secaucus, Bayonne, and Hoboken.

Anticipating the potential suspension of Emergency Department services on March 14, HRH has committed to the following as of that date:

  • Relocate existing healthcare workers who wish to be placed within the system at Secaucus, Bayonne or Hoboken
  • Place an ambulance outside the Heights Emergency Department for two weeks
  • Deploy a Mobile Health Unit following that period to provide various levels of care

HRH will continue to commit to the NJDOH’s Certificate of Need process.

HRH assumed operations of Christ Hospital (renamed to Heights University Hospital) in November, 2024. This followed CarePoint Health’s previous filing for bankruptcy, with HRH stepping in at last minute at the request of the Mayors of Hoboken and Jersey City to prevent its imminent closure.

In the process of keeping Christ Hospital’s doors open, HRH was immediately faced with tens of millions of dollars of liabilities, vendor underpayments, unpaid wages to essential healthcare workers, and a system that had been drained of resources and critical physician relationships. Nonetheless, HRH and its Chairman Yan Moshe took these challenges head on by investing over $100 million at Christ Hospital in an attempt to aggressively stabilize the system including the rebuilding of service lines, enacting of labor agreements, recruitment of physicians, and more.

Despite these historic investments, Heights University Hospital’s losses of $74 million severely strained resources across the HRH network and were in large part due to unforeseen factors including drastic cuts to Medicaid and other critical funding initiated by the One Big Beautiful Bill, the cutting of Charity Care at the state level by roughly half, and a rising rate of uninsured patients. Additionally, the New Jersey Department of Health was unable to provide sufficient funding to maintain operations.
Despite the anticipated suspension of Emergency Department services, HRH has communicated to the City of Jersey City its desire to pursue redevelopment opportunities in the coming months that would support the construction of a brand new, financially sustainable hospital. A new, state-of-the-art building would allow HRH to recruit new physicians, expand service lines to generate needed revenue, and provide the highest standards of modern care to the community.
