Hudson Regional Health (HRH) is proud to announce that Bayonne University Hospital (BUH) has achieved a significant milestone of zero hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) in 2024 and 2025. BUH is one of the only acute care hospitals in New Jersey to achieve two consecutive years with zero reported HAIs across the entire facility, further demonstrating HRH’s commitment to patient safety and the continued transformation of patient care.
Zero HAIs at a facility represent one of the gold standards in hospital care, reflecting strong infection prevention practices and a highly trained staff. HAIs remain a challenge at hospitals across the country, as they often increase patient morbidity and mortality, extend the length of hospital stays, and raise the cost of care. HAIs generally occur in 1 out of every 31 hospitalized patients.
Two consecutive years of zero HAIs reflect HRH’s dedication to the highest standards of patient safety and its commitment to quality outcomes.
“This milestone accomplishment demonstrates Hudson Regional Health’s laser focus on improving the quality of life for all of our patients with our highly trained staff,” said HRH Chairman Yan Moshe. “My thanks go out to our outstanding healthcare professionals who have worked tirelessly and upheld the highest standards of care to make this moment possible.”
“Reaching zero healthcare-acquired infections for two consecutive years is no small feat,” said CEO and President Dr. Nizar Kifaieh. “It speaks to the dedication of our entire team at Bayonne University Hospital and the expert care they provide each and every day.”
The milestone achievement comes as BUH has continued a dramatic transformation since HRH took over operations at the facility following the prior operator’s declaration of bankruptcy. In the 15 months since HRH assumed leadership of the system, BHU has seen substantial, quality improvements in patient experience scores, patients giving the hospital top ratings, reduced wait times for the Emergency Department, and an increase in the average daily census.
Additionally, BUH has undertaken a number of significant, multi-million dollar investments into infrastructure upgrades including current renovations to the lobby, as well as institutional reforms such as an overhaul of Emergency Department operations, improvements to equipment and supplies, and the credentialing of hundreds of new physicians across the Bayonne system.
“The Bayonne community can rest assured that when they step foot in our hospital, they will receive the highest quality care from our high-performing staff,” said BUH Chief Hospital Executive Dr. Vijayant Singh. “This achievement reflects our unwavering commitment to patient safety and clinical excellence, and we will continue to build on this success at Bayonne’s only acute care facility.”
“Achieving two consecutive years of zero healthcare-associated infections reflects the dedication and vigilance of our entire care team,” said Cynthia Mercado-Reyes, Director of Infection Control. “Our focus on evidence-based protocols, staff training, and ongoing monitoring has been critical to ensuring patient safety and delivering the highest standard of care.”
