Leading Orthopedic Surgeon Robert Kayal Joins Hudson Regional Hospital as Chief of Musculoskeletal

Hudson Regional Hospital is proud to announce the appointment of leading orthopedic surgeon Robert Kayal, MD, FAAOS, founder, president and CEO of Kayal Orthopaedic Center, to chief of musculoskeletal at the Secaucus-based community hospital.  With the appointment, Hudson Regional Hospital — a two-year-old, full-service, community-based institution known for providing quality, comprehensive care to patients throughout northern New Jersey, attracting the area’s most renowned talent, investing in the most cutting-edge technology, and building a healthier community — will further solidify its reputation for delivering a new standard in state-of-the-art care as a center of excellence in orthopaedics and minimally invasive robotic surgery.

As a multispecialty orthopaedic practice with 31 providers and offices in Glen Rock, Franklin Lakes, Westwood, and Paramus, “our team of master surgeons brings to Hudson Regional Hospital a level of expertise in all aspects of orthopaedics, from spine surgery and disc replacement to interbody fusion, shoulder/hip/knee replacement, and newer fields such as minimally invasive hip preservation and arthroscopy,” Dr. Kayal said.  “We’re highly skilled in the use of Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Technology for total knee, total hip, and partial knee replacements and are excited to contribute our knowledge and experience to the hospital’s own center of orthopaedic excellence and further build on its unique Institute for Robotic Surgery,” Dr. Kayal said of the institute, which comprehends the hospital’s broad expertise in using advanced robotically assisted technologies for a range of surgical applications.

While robotically assisted surgery brings an unprecedented degree of precision and accuracy to joint replacement procedures, enhances the process of sizing, positioning, and placing implants virtually using high-resolution, cross-sectional imaging, and enables a quicker recovery for patients, the vast majority of providers either don’t possess this cutting-edge technology or aren’t trained in its use.

By contrast, “we’re committed to staying current on the most modern practices in the field of orthopaedic medicine in order to be able to provide the best care to patients and we’ve mastered the use of computer-assisted joint replacement surgery and the Mako Robotic Arm since 2017,” said Dr. Kayal, who’s been in practice since 1999 and works diligently to remain on the leading edge of the field.

“We currently combine the use of the Mako robotic arm with employment of the direct anterior approach to hip replacement surgery, two techniques that, when used together, help ensure greater precision, expedite recovery, minimize soft tissue damage because we’re not cutting tendons, muscles, or ligaments, and reduce the risk of dislocation,” Dr. Kayal said.  “Hudson Regional Hospital is on the same page as we are in terms of wanting to serve the community with the best in cutting-edge care and we’re privileged that they chose to partner with us in delivering on that promise.”

According to Dr. Kayal, “Hudson Regional Hospital has recently undertaken extensive facility-wide upgrades and has invested significantly in the most state-of-the-art technologies and its Institute for Robotic Surgery,” he said of the hospital’s acquisition of Mazor, Globus ExcelsiusGPS, Stryker Mako, and da Vinci Xi-branded robotic-assisted surgical systems — as well as top physicians skilled in their use. “Hudson Regional Hospital shares our philosophy of staying current, keeping our fingers on the pulse of medicine, and offering the latest and greatest technologies in the field of orthopaedic surgery,” he added.  “They’ve invested in the future and we’re excited to partner with them to deliver that level of care to the surrounding community.”

A Natural Fit

Since opening its doors under the leadership of new owners/managers in January 2018, Hudson Regional Hospital’s extensive and facility-wide investments in top talent and technology have been recognized by patients and industry members alike.  In 2019, a number of the hospital’s physicians across a range of specialties (including spine surgery, orthopedics, cardiology, vascular surgery, and pain management) were recognized as Top Doctors by Castle Connolly, America’s trusted source for identifying top doctors and hospitals through an exhaustive and independent process of peer nomination, research, review, and screening.  In a more recent 2020 Castle Connolly survey, Hudson Regional Hospital ranked among the top facilities in the state (with 350 beds or fewer) in a dozen different categories, including the treatment and care of hip and knee replacement, congestive heart failure, pain management, and high-risk pregnancy and birth.

“As we’ve continued to grow and expand our reputation, we’ve always been on the lookout for highly qualified and skilled surgeons from the area to build clinical service areas such as musculoskeletal,” said Nizar Kifaieh, MD, MBA, CPE, FACEP, president and CEO of Hudson Regional Hospital. “Dr. Kayal — who’s well-known for his expertise, outstanding outcomes, high patient satisfaction, and stellar industry reputation — was a natural fit for Hudson Regional Hospital and we’re delighted to welcome him aboard to help lead our excellence in the field of musculoskeletal diseases.  Dr. Kayal brings a full spectrum of expertise in orthopaedics, including general sports medicine, joint replacement, upper and lower extremity, and spine surgery and his team members are highly trained in minimally invasive surgical approaches, which are in full sync with our institution.”

“With our top-notch physicians, state-of-the-art equipment, excellent outcomes, and commitment to an exceptional patient experience, Hudson Regional Hospital is on par with some of the best facilities out there,” confirmed Dr. Kifaieh.  “We’re excited to welcome Dr. Kayal to our team and equally excited for residents of the community, who can now come here to access the cutting-edge technology and premier clinical care that they’d previously had to travel elsewhere to obtain.”

“Based on the quality and quantity of providers in our practice and the extent of our experience in the field, we’re collectively bringing hundreds of years of orthopaedic excellence to Hudson Regional Hospital,” Dr. Kayal said.  “It always excites us to try to do things better and increasingly improve outcomes and we aim and strive for perfection every day.  Our team aligns beautifully with Hudson Regional Hospital and we proudly join with them in working to provide the best medical care, robotic-assisted expertise, and patient experience possible.”
