Autism Services

Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), is a condition that affects the way an individual interacts and communicates with others. It is a spectrum disorder, meaning that the severity and type of symptoms can vary. The most common signs of autism include difficulty with social interactions, impaired communication, and restricted, repetitive behaviors. Those with autism may have difficulty making and maintaining eye contact, understanding body language, expressing emotions, and understanding the feelings of others. They may also have trouble with verbal communication, often using language in an unusual way or repeating words or phrases.
ABA Therapy with Umbrella Care Academy
Umbrella Care Academy offers in-home and clinic-based and ABA therapy for children with autism. We strive to enhance the lives of the individuals we work with by utilizing the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) with evidence-based effective treatment. Our purpose is to assist in creating social engagement, learning opportunities, behavior change of social significance, and add meaningful experiences to family life.
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a scientific approach to teaching children with autism how to learn and behave, based on the idea that a child’s behavior can be changed by understanding the causes of the behavior and then using positive reinforcement to encourage desired behaviors. Umbrella Care Academy provides services from birth through age 18.
In-home ABA Therapy
In-home ABA therapy involves an ABA therapist and parent working together to create a safe and comfortable learning environment for the child. A Board-Certified Behavior Analyst will create and oversee the individualized goals and objectives for the child that are tailored to their needs. These goals can range from teaching the child basic skills like potty training, to more complex skills like improving communication, social skills, and problem-solving. The ABA therapist will use positive reinforcement to reward the child for desired behaviors and to encourage them to keep trying.
In-home ABA therapy is ideal for children with autism because it allows them to learn in a familiar and comfortable environment. This helps them to feel more relaxed and less anxious, which can lead to better results in the long run. The therapist and parent or caregiver also have the opportunity to observe the child in their own environment, which can provide valuable insight into the child's behavior.
Clinic-based ABA Therapy
Clinic-based ABA therapy at Hudson Regional Hospital offers a controlled setting that allows for consistent implementation of interventions. The clinic provides a structured and predictable environment, which is beneficial for individuals with autism who often thrive in routines.
Clinic-based ABA therapy equally promotes collaboration of parents and caregivers, who will receive training on ABA techniques and strategies to support their child’s progress outside of the clinic. By involving the parent or caregiver, whether in-home or clinic-based ABA therapy, we ensure that the child's progress is consistent and that they are making progress in all areas of their development.
